Responding to the news that the Government will launch a new investigation into NHS maternity services across the country, Liberal Democrat MPs Bobby Dean (Carshalton and Wallington), Helen Maguire (Epsom and Ewell) and Luke Taylor (Sutton and Cheam) have issued a joint statement.

The statement reads:

“It is right that the Government takes seriously the need to sort out maternity services across the NHS, and we welcome this new investigation and taskforce.

“We already know that maternity services in the Epsom and St Helier NHS trust require improvement - the Care Quality Commission made that clear in their report last year.

“The staff at the hospital do an amazing job but they and local families are being let down by a lack of investment and a building that doesn’t meet modern standards

“This new investigation must not be another review that ends up collecting dust on the shelf. The Government must take action as soon as issues are identified through this process.

“Local residents are having to reckon with struggling services across the Epsom and St Helier Trust - and they cannot afford to wait until the next decade for the new hospital building they were promised by the last Government, and have seen scandalously delayed by the current one. Key services like maternity need fixing right now.

“This announcement marks good progress, but we must see real results.”
